You will be sent a PDF called "Topics to Questions" to read over the weekend. This will help you confirm your research topic, as well as understand why and how it's necessary to ask research questions.
In the comments field below, post your Research topic and THREE research questions you have as now by MONDAY, NOV 11th at 5pm.
Topic: Healthcare Reform in the United States
ReplyDeleteQ1: What are the main problems with our current healthcare system?
Q2: What are the main problems with the Affordable Care Act ?
Q3: What would be a good solution to our healthcare crisis?
Great questions and topic, Andy. Good work!
DeleteTopic: The benefits GMO in the United States
ReplyDelete1. Why are people against GMO when it is approved by the FDA?
2. How does GMO affect people?
3. How does GMO help agricultural growth?
This is good - are you going to focus on this issue locally, nationally, or globally?
DeleteI was going to focus nationally. Would focusing locally be better?
DeleteTopic: Whether of not Title 9 is still relevant in college athletics
ReplyDelete1. Why was Title 9 implemented initially into college sports? What was the goal?
2. What are the unintended consequences?
3. What is a fair resolution moving forward?
Is Title IX about females in sports? I am sure there is an argument to make after initial research. Good questions!
DeleteTopic: Tourism in Hawaii
ReplyDelete1. How does tourism affect Hawaii culturally, economically, and ecologically?
2. Do the economic benefits of tourism outweigh the cons?
3. Are there any programs or government funding to restore Hawaiian culture & natural resources?
Great topic - good questions! What is the significant about this topic (i.e. what do you want your readers to understand)?
DeleteTopic: Gun control
ReplyDelete1. Will the government focus heavy on gun control issue?
2. How do the government regulate the guns in public?
3. Will the law be passed on banning certain types of gun?
Good, relevant topic. Do you want to focus on the state of Hawaii or is this a Federal Government question. Why is this significant for readers?
DeleteTopic: Affects of bullying in High Schools
ReplyDelete1. What major instances have occurred in this country due to bullying?
2. Are high schools doing enough to prevent it?
3. Are the safety precautions string enough?
You must have meant "strong" in #3. I think you're on the right track to asking about policy (school policies and maybe even law) and bullying. You first question is important - look for themes to connect certain cases. Maybe something interesting will arise!
DeleteTopic: Chinese Trading of tiger bones to make wine
ReplyDelete1. Tiger extinction in different geographical areas --animal extinction? (I don't know if that's too broad)
2. Animal Poaching
3. Cultural morality --is there a moral standard? if not, when can you ban practice?...is it right, if necessary, to ban practice or shame another culture if negative effects occur?
#3 is a HUGE question - a good one though! Are you focusing on Tiger Bones or cultural practices that are in conflict with animal rights? Chinese trade? I think you need to figure out if there is enough info on tiger bones to make that your topic.
DeleteTopic: Affects Colorado will have on the entire US if a new state is formed
ReplyDelete1.) What type of influence will the movement have on other states?
2.) Will Colorado start to lose income from tourism dying down?
3.) How will the US be seen as by other countries?
Interesting topic. I think you will also need to ask: has this happened before? what are the consequences of succeeding from the union?
DeleteJackie Robinson's effect on African American Athletes
ReplyDelete1. What were the issues with Civil Rights and African American athletes?
2. How did Jackie Robinson pave the way for other African American athletes?
3. What are today's impacts of African American athletes in all American sports?
#3 Seems to be the most important for making a claim. Why is this topic significant today?
DeleteTopic: Effects of stereotypes
ReplyDelete1. How do stereotypes develop?
2. How can you break stereotypes?
3. Are stereotypes the same throughout different countries?
This is too broad. Why specific stereotypes are you interested in discussing? What issues are relevant today?
DeleteRacism in Hawaii
ReplyDelete1. Who is this racism towards?
2. What is the cause of this racism?
3. What can the community do to stop this racism?
Interesting topic - I imagine this will be [emotionally, psychologically] difficult. I wonder where you might find resources? Check the Native Hawaiian floor at Hamilton - look for newspapers in the archive. Maybe you can see how racism has changed in Hawaii or how racism is different in Hawaii than in other places in the US and how statehood has affected this change?
DeleteI could not find sources and had an extremely hard time with the letter so I am changing mine to Legalizing Marijuana Nationally.
Delete1. What are the benefits of legalizing marijuana for the government?
2. What are the benefits of legalizing marijuana for the community?
3. What are the health benefits of legalizing marijuana?
I had to change my topic question because I could not find very many reliable resources on Mac n' Cheese
ReplyDeleteTopic: Same Sex Marriage
1. What religious freedoms are challenged?
2. How is "the family" directed effected?
3. What are possible solutions to satisfy both parties?
It's not just about Mac n' Chesse, but about issues surrounding the FDA, public health, government control, etc.!!!
DeleteBut this topic is good - are you going to focus on these questions as they relate in Hawaii?
Topic: The affect Ōlelo Hawaiʻi has on Kanaka Maoli
ReplyDelete1. How has the suppression of Hawaiian language affected the self identity for Kanaka Maoli
2. How was Hawaiian language the basis of Hawaiian Culture?
3. How has the revitalization of Hawaiian language affected Contemporary Hawaiians
Good topic - I think #3 could be extended into researching the WAYS Hawaiian language has been revitalized as well (in schools, government, etc.).
